Heyy guys! Kayse’s back at it again.

So welcome to Valence! We are a fantasy medieval RP server that is heavily based off D&D, so naturally we all have characters that we play. Creating a character can be difficult, especially if you’ve never made an OC before- and especially if you’ve never roleplayed before. So I’m here to help!

Are there any rules that limit me?

Not really! You can be any species, and can have basically any sort of backstory- the important part is to make sure that it fits within the server’s theme of a medieval fantasy. The only rules that we ask of are the following:

  • No minors.
    • All characters must be at least 18 years old, or whatever the equivalent is in your character’s species.
  • Keep it SFW!
    • While Valence does occasionally cover heavy topics, it’s important to respect our rules against NSFW. If you want your character’s backstory to be edgy, that’s fine! Just be sure you don’t go too overboard, and respect others when interacting with them.
  • Don’t be modern.
    • As previously stated, we are a fantasy medieval server. While we do encourage players to be creative with their ideas, it’s important to keep with the theme of the server. Don’t use real-life places when creating a backstory, no modern technology- keep it within 476 A.D. - 1820. We have science, but it’s very limited- if you want to include science themes- try to include the study of magic and the arcane!
  • No harmful depictions of mental illness.
    • Of course mental illnesses are completely normal, and should be accepted- though it’s important that if your character is mentally ill, that they are accurate and non-offensive. It’s also important to remember that not everyone is comfortable with interacting with characters that might have a mental illness. Valence is a place that people go to escape their real lives, and oftentimes sensitive topics can make others uncomfortable. Just be respectful!

What does my character need?

  • A name.
    • Obviously a great starting point for creating a character is a name! I usually suggest to try and avoid super modern names, but there aren’t any restrictions on what you can use. If you’re struggling, try using a fantasy name generator- or play around with different languages and name meanings.
    • Request a name change here.
  • Species.
    • The next most important thing is your character’s species. We are a fantasy server, so you don’t have to be human! The most common species on Valence are usually from D&D, so check out this website for information on those. The second most common species is Minecraft-based species. These range from sniffers, all the way to endermen! The last option is making your own species. Making your own species can be a little difficult, so feel free to take inspiration from species from different media, just be sure to put your own spin on it!
  • Backstory.
    • While not necessarily required, a backstory can help you develop goals, morals, and ideals for your character. As previously mentioned, make sure that your backstory isn’t NSFW. You will likely need a place, and a general idea of what your character has experienced before their arrival to Kara. Sometimes this will also include your character’s reason for coming to Kara.
  • Goals, ideals, and personality.
    • When joining, it’s good to think of where you might want your character to progress too. Do they want power? Respect? Status? A family? Along with that, having ideals and certain personality traits are a good way to allow yourself to start actually roleplaying as your character.
  • Appearance.
    • Obviously your character’s appearance should be reminiscent of their species, but you do have plenty of options to customise how they look. Hair colour, skin colour, scars, horns, tails, the works! Your Minecraft skin should reflect how you want your character to look, and if you want some quick and easy art- try using Picrew. Personally I like this one, it’s mostly geared towards tieflings, but it has a lot of great options for other species. Also- don’t have your character wearing modern clothes, ripped jeans and hoodies don’t exist here.

Okay, I’ve made my character- what now?

Now it’s time to get out there! Start playing on Valence, and keep an eye out for more blog posts to help you get started playing. If you’d like, you can make a character bio to post in the main Discord here. There is no approval process, just go ahead and make your post- be sure to not include too many emojis or special characters, as our Discord bot might call you out for spamming.

If you want some assistance with getting started making friends, making a lore plotting post is always a great idea! Remember that this channel is completely Out-of-Character. Get some people interested in your character, and see who might want to interact with you!

Anyways, I hope that helped at least a little bit. Once again, welcome to Valence- and I’m excited to meet your newly created character.
